Requests to Advisory Neighborhood Commissions

Advisory Neighborhood Commissions are independent, elected bodies. By statute, each Commission is designated to be the primary custodian of their own records. Requests for ANC records should be directed to the relevant Commission.

The Office of Advisory Neighborhood Commissions (OANC) is responsible for “[c]oordinating with the Office of Open Government ("OOG") to maintain and improve public transparency, including coordinating with OOG to assist Commissions in fulfilling Freedom of Information Act ("FOIA") requests.”1 In serving a FOIA request, an ANC may act as its own FOIA officer or designate and officer from outside the Commission. While the OANC has frequently served as a Commission’s FOIA officer, it is not legally required to do so and reviews each matter on a case-by-case basis.

More information is available in the OANC Open Government and FOIA Policy, available here.

Requests to the Office of Advisory Neighborhood Commissions

If you cannot find the information you are looking for here or elsewhere on our website, you may submit a FOIA request online via the District of Columbia Freedom of Information Act Public Access Portal. Requests may also be submitted by mail or email. However, please note that FOIA requests submitted online will be easier to track and process.

To understand the FOIA process before making a request, including information on appeals, please see the District of Columbia Freedom of Information Act webpage.

The FOIA Officer is the principal point of contact within OANC for advice and policy guidance on matters pertaining to the administration of the FOIA. We are committed to handling all requests professionally and expeditiously.
