Advisory Neighborhood Commissioners serve two-year terms and are elected in the general election during every even numbered year. 

Anyone interested in being a candidate for the ANC on the November 2026 ballot must first circulate a nominating petition, which can be picked up at the Board of Elections.

The first date to pick up nominating petitions for ANC this year is Monday, July 6, 2026. Each candidate has a signature requirement of at least 25 registered qualified electors in the single-member district from which the candidate seeks election.

The moderated panel discussion with focus on the establishment and commissioner experiences from the early years of this unique form of grass-roots democracy in Washington, D.C.

Advisory Neighborhood Commissions (ANCs) are locally elected bodies which consider a wide range of policies and programs affecting their neighborhoods, including traffic, parking, recreation, street improvements, liquor licenses, zoning, economic development, police protection, sanitation and trash collection, and the District's annual budget.

The petition circulation period runs from Monday, May 5, 2025, through Tuesday, May 27, 2025.
